Nathaniel Alston, Jr., 66, died Thursday, March 1, 2012 at the Danville Regional Medical Center. Born May 13, 1946 in Greensboro, NC, he was the son of the late Nathaniel Alston, Sr. and Louise Austin Alston, who survives. He was married to Rachel Carter Alston, who survives.
Survivors including his wife of the residence and mother of Greensboro, NC, are two sons, Andre Alston (Racquel) of Jonesboro, GA and Barry Carter of Lithonia, GA; three sisters, Wanda Richmond (Marvin) and Regina Alston both of Greensboro, NC and Dorothea Alston of Winston-Salem, NC; one brother, Ronald Alston of Greensboro, NC and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to his father he was predeceased by a brother, Anthony Alston.

Louise Alston (Austin)

Louise Annie Alston, age 95 transitioned from her earthly home on January 15, 2021 at her residence. She was born in Greensboro, North Carolina to the late Sylvester and Annie Austin on October 30, 1925. She was educated in the Guilford County School System.

Louise was an entrepreneur for over 60 years along with her husband, Nathaniel R. Alston. They were recognized by the Greensboro News and Record for Black Ownership on June 17, 1990. Louise could be seen daily on her 10 mile walk to and from her job. She was truly dedicated and an inspiration to all the kids. She was known as the Snowball lady.

In addition to her parents, Louise was preceded in death by her husband, Nathaniel Alston, two sons, Nathaniel Alston, Jr.; Anthony Alston; two sisters and three brothers. Louise leaves behind to cherish her memory one son, Ronald L. Alston; three daughters, Wanda Richmond (Marvin), Dorothea Alston (Joseph), and Regina Alston, one sister, Mary E. Austin, one brother-in-law, James Kimble (Juanita), one daughter-in-law, Rachel Brim; seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Words from the family:
Over the years, if a car door opened, Mon was usually the first one in. We followed her to the concerts in the park, reunions, parades, and out to eat a various restaurants; her favorite K&W, Stephanie's, and Gold Corral. Lou-Lou "Baby-Doll" was our pillar, our heart, our foundation and the cornerstone of the family.

John Leonard Clapp

John Leonard Clapp was born to the late John L Clapp and Parthenia Richmond Clapp on April 8, 919.  He took the wings of glory into eternity from this life on October 4, 2013 at 94 years old, his "'WOW" moment.

 

To the union of John L and Parthenia were born Albert, Walter, Maybell, O.Z., Alta, and Dorothy his sisters and brothers who have all preceded him in death.

 

Leonard’s life was filled with raising his family and work.  His jobs included working at the Chevrolet dealership in Greensboro as a mechanic and co-owing a business with his brother as a shoemaker where his slogan was “Have shoes will travel”. Leonard retired from Wade’s Dry Cleaners and filed his days with fishing and gardening.

 

Elder Clapp was a non-judgmental man with a peaceful presence. He was devoted to the work of the ministry where he served as senior elder. As a longtime member of Inner Growth Ministry Outreach, he trained ushers and spoke of those things to come. He was known to everyone as “Daddy Clapp” and will be greatly missed by all those whom knew him.

 

John Leonard leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife of 30 years, Iris Robins Clapp. He also leaves to cherish his memory ten children, Linda Clapp Welborn (George deceased), John L. Clapp, Jr., James Henry Clapp, Girardeau Clapp (deceased), Donald Wayne Clapp (Carolene), Portia Lavonne Clapp Alston, Keith Smith (deceased), Donald Lee Garner (Marieta), Nathaniel Garner and Michael Garner. He had a host of grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

James Henry Clapp

In Loving Memory of our Daddy and last oldest brother, James Henry Clapp

James H. Clapp, aka, Pop and Jimmy was born to the late John Leonard and Porter Mae Clapp on December 9, 1946, in Greensboro, NC at L. Richardson Memorial Hospital. James stepped into newness of life on May 30, 2019, due to a lengthy illness. He was called Popeye due to his beautiful large black eyeballs and long eyelashes, by his Aunt Maye Bell Jones. James outgrew his grove name as Pop and later changed his name to Jimmy Clapp to fit his new persona image as a Pool Shark and Businessman.

James was a productive worker, a good father and a great brother to his siblings. His first job was bagging groceries and later trained as a butcher and cashier at Dick Pascha Grocery Store, while living in the Morningside Homes, affectionately called the Grove. He was educated in the Greensboro City Schools and at the age of 19, he married Cynthia Tarpley and born to this union was six children.

He worked at Southeastern Furniture Store in High Point, NC to Bessemer Avenue and South Elm Eugene Street in Greensboro, NC. James was a tremendous salesman and knew his product very well. Every morning, you could see him sitting in a rocking chair in front of the store reading the New York Times, drinking his coffee and waving at the people, who blew their horns to greet him.

After leaving Southeastern Furniture Store, he moved his family to Brooklyn, New York to be hired as the first African American Salesman at J. Michaels Furniture Store. James and his brother JC, and along with first cousin Tom Petty, open up the Pepper Box Social Club, an after-hours relaxing bar in Brooklyn, NY. The club was accepted into the Round Robins Club Association.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by daughters, Candy Clapp Means, and Yolanda Clapp; brothers, John Leonard “JC” Clapp, Jr., Girardeau Clapp and Keith Smith and sister, Linda Wellborne.

Sharing his pleasant memories of his life are his wife, Janine Crosby-Clapp, sons, Horace LaFayette Clapp (Shanine) and Antoine Chavis Clapp; daughters, Robin Tarpley (Martin) and Jackie Clapp; brothers, Rev. Donald Clapp (Caroleen), Donald Garner, Michael Garner and Nathaniel Garner; sister Portia Alston; six grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Phillip Means; and other relatives and friends.

James was always clean and had a swagger walk about himself. He will be greatly missed in the physical, but never missed in consciousness. We love you James Henry, aka, Pop and Jimmy Clapp!

Linda Mae Clapp-Welborn

Linda Mae (Sugarlump) Clapp-Welborn was born to the parentage of the late John Leonard and Porter Mae Petty Clapp on January 1, 1944 in Guilford County, North Carolina. She transitioned from this earthly existence to her eternal bliss on November 12, 2017 at the home of daughter Portia and son-in-law Jan Howard in Knightdale, NC. She resided in Greensboro, NC all her life until 2015 when moved to Knightdale.

At an early age of nine, she took on the responsibility of helping her father to raise her five siblings following the death of their mother at age 26. The children ranged in ages from ten months to seven years old.

Linda was educated in Greensboro Public Schools and graduated Dudley High School in 1962. She was in the Dudley High School Performing Arts and special attendant to the queen’s court. She was an honor student. Sugarlump, affectionately called, had a contagious smile and warmed the hearts of all those she met. Always extending a heart-felt hospitality to everyone. She was one of the founding members of Inner Growth Ministry Outreach Inc. in 1985. She was elected Mother of the Church where she continued to nurture, direct and counsel the membership until her timely departure.

Linda hobbies included dancing, softball, exercising and high-speed walking. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and word search puzzles of which she completed many. She enjoyed cooking and being hospitable to everyone who entered her home.

Linda was previously married to Frank Oldham and to the union was born daughter: Portia Denise. Later in her life, love struck again, and she was wedded to George Ralph Welborn.

Linda was preceded in death by husband: George Ralph Welborn, father and mother, John and Porter Mae Clapp; brothers: John L. Clapp Jr (JC), Girardeau Clapp and Keith Smith.

Surviving brothers are James Henry Clapp, Donald Wayne Clapp (Carolene), Donald Lee (Marie), Nathaniel Michael Garner (Nicole) and sister, Portia Lavon Clapp-Alston.

John Leonard Clapp, Jr

John Leonard Clapp, Jr. was born to the late John Leonard Clapp, Sr. and Porter Mae Petty-Clapp on May 9, 1945. God, in his infinite wisdom and mercy, called John t himself on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 with his family by his side.

 

John attended the Guilford County School System. He served in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. His work history included The City of Greensboro, K-Mart Distribution Center, Levolor and North Carolina A&T State University. He was a third generation shoemaker and this was his passion.

 

John accepted Jesus, the Christ, as his Lord and Savior and was affiliated with Inner Growth Ministry Outreach.

 

John (JC to many) dearly loved his family, the camaraderie of friends and fishing. John love unconditionally. He was an awesome example to those who knew hence of the freeing power of forgiveness.

 

In addition to his father and mother, John was preceded in death by brothers Girardeau Clapp, Keith Smith and brother-in-law George Welborn.

 

John (JC) leaves to celebrate his life, his sons and daughters, Derrick L. Clapp, Mareo A. Clapp (Sharon), Katrice A. Clapp White (Ronton), Aretha A. Shaw (Harry) of Aiken, SC, Jaycee G. Clapp (Alice), John L. Clapp, III; special sons, Bryan R. Johnson and Damon W. Johnson of Atlanta, GA; his siblings, Linda Clapp Welborn, James Henry Clapp, Donald Wayne Clapp (Carolene), Portia Lavonne Clapp Alston, Donald Lee Garner (Marietta), Nathaniel Garner and Michael Garner, his uncle, William H. Petty, fourteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, Phillis Johnson, whom he affectionately called “My Honey” and his stepmother Iris Clapp and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Carol Godley

 Carol J. Godley was born on May 27, 1945, in New York, and was the daughter of the late Waldo and Cordell Godley. She transitioned home to be with God on Wednesday, April 22, 2020, at the Suburban in Bethesda, Maryland.

Carol’s early childhood was spent in Charlotte, Pantego, and Warrenton, North Carolina. After graduation from James B. Dudley High School in 1963, she enrolled in John C. Smith in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she earned a B.S. degree in Sociology and joined the Gamma Lambda Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.  She later received an M.S. degree in Sociology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Carol’s professional career included positions as an independent consultant and project coordination and administration. In these positions, she worked with human resources databases to issue scheduled recruitment and retention reports for submission to a court-appointed arbiter. She served as the firm’s on-site supervisor at the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Community Services.

Her work as an independent consultant required her to analyze the service needs of the District of Columbia lottery to recommend contractual services. Wrote statements of work to procure vendor services, monitored vendor performance, and approved requisitions and purchase orders.

She leaves to cherish her memories, cousins Francis (Sonny) Brown of Winston Salem, NC, James Kimble (wife Juanita) of Canton, MA, and Anika Gaskins of Roseville, CA, and a host of very close and dedicated friends whom she loved dearly.

Patrick A. Hargraves

Patrick E. Hargraves was born on October 19, 1938, in Guilford County to the late Floyd and Ada Ratliff Hargraves. He graduated from James B. Dudley High School, Class of 1956.

Patrick was employed by Greensboro Manufacturing Company, before being bought out by Levi Strauss & Company, where he worked for a lifetime and retired.

Patrick was preceded in death by wife: Gertrude (Petty) Hargraves; siblings: Waldo, Ronnie, Kenny Elaine, Jacqueline and Carolyn Hargraves.

Patrick leaves to cherish his memories; children: Roderick (Theresa) Hargraves, Parrish (Tonya) Hargraves; five (5) grandsons; three (3) granddaughters; one brother; Michael (Betty) Hargraves; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Geary Wayne Nickens

Mr. Geary Wayne Nickens, affectionately known as "Crab" was born August 21, 1951 to the late Philmore Nickens and Allonious Rogers Nickens in Toms River, New Jersey He was called home to the Lord on March 25, 2017.

He was one of five children, two brothers preceded him in death. Geary joined Hickory Grove Baptist Church at an early age.

Most people knew Geary to be a simple man, independent, yet outgoing. He had a determined spirit that when he set his mind to do something, he was bound to achieve it. After serving in the U.S. Army, his expert trade was being an electrician.

This "free-spirited man" was compassionate about traveling and seeing the world, but most compassionate about his love for his mother.

His favorite past-time was dancing, and listening to "old school" music. Geary had a love for watching movies, Carolina Panthers Football, exercising, jogging, and driving his convertible cars.

He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Mrs.  Allonious R. Nickens; two brothers, Reggie Nickens of Durham, NC and Keith Nickens of Chapel Hill, NC. Three aunts, Mrs. Gertrude R. Nunn of Chapel Hill, NC, Elizabeth R. Barden of Baltimore, MD, Oscarina Gibson of Toms River, NJ; one sister-in-law and special friend, Taundra Nickens of Durham, NC; one and only niece, like a daughter, Susan Nickens of Mebane, NC; nephews, loving cousins, and man y friends of the Rogers Road community.

David Nickens

Mr. David Bryon Nickens, 60, passed away Monday, April 1, 2013 at his home. David was born in Lakewood County, NJ. He is preceded in death by his father, Philmore Nickens and son, Kevin Nickens. Mr. Nickens was employed as a truck driver until his health failed.

Surviving are his wife, Taundra Love Nickens; mother, Allonious Nickens; daughter, Susan Nickens; step-daughter, Sierra Fellows; step-son, Jeffery Fellows and brothers, Reggie, Geary and Keith Nickens.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2013, at First Baptist Church in Chapel Hill with Pastor Maythel Clemmons officiating. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends, 6-8 p.m., Friday, April 5, 2013 at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Fresenius Medical Care West Pettigrew Dialysis , 1507 W Pettigrew St, Durham, NC 27705.
