In Loving Memory of our Daddy and last oldest brother, James Henry Clapp
James H. Clapp, aka, Pop and Jimmy was born to the late John Leonard and Porter Mae Clapp on December 9, 1946, in Greensboro, NC at L. Richardson Memorial Hospital. James stepped into newness of life on May 30, 2019, due to a lengthy illness. He was called Popeye due to his beautiful large black eyeballs and long eyelashes, by his Aunt Maye Bell Jones. James outgrew his grove name as Pop and later changed his name to Jimmy Clapp to fit his new persona image as a Pool Shark and Businessman.
James was a productive worker, a good father and a great brother to his siblings. His first job was bagging groceries and later trained as a butcher and cashier at Dick Pascha Grocery Store, while living in the Morningside Homes, affectionately called the Grove. He was educated in the Greensboro City Schools and at the age of 19, he married Cynthia Tarpley and born to this union was six children.
He worked at Southeastern Furniture Store in High Point, NC to Bessemer Avenue and South Elm Eugene Street in Greensboro, NC. James was a tremendous salesman and knew his product very well. Every morning, you could see him sitting in a rocking chair in front of the store reading the New York Times, drinking his coffee and waving at the people, who blew their horns to greet him.
After leaving Southeastern Furniture Store, he moved his family to Brooklyn, New York to be hired as the first African American Salesman at J. Michaels Furniture Store. James and his brother JC, and along with first cousin Tom Petty, open up the Pepper Box Social Club, an after-hours relaxing bar in Brooklyn, NY. The club was accepted into the Round Robins Club Association.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by daughters, Candy Clapp Means, and Yolanda Clapp; brothers, John Leonard “JC” Clapp, Jr., Girardeau Clapp and Keith Smith and sister, Linda Wellborne.
Sharing his pleasant memories of his life are his wife, Janine Crosby-Clapp, sons, Horace LaFayette Clapp (Shanine) and Antoine Chavis Clapp; daughters, Robin Tarpley (Martin) and Jackie Clapp; brothers, Rev. Donald Clapp (Caroleen), Donald Garner, Michael Garner and Nathaniel Garner; sister Portia Alston; six grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Phillip Means; and other relatives and friends.
James was always clean and had a swagger walk about himself. He will be greatly missed in the physical, but never missed in consciousness. We love you James Henry, aka, Pop and Jimmy Clapp!
